Aurora Borealis

Never figured to see it way down here. No.... not a National Geagraphic shot..... but I finally saw one without even leaving Coos County. My TV reception was messing up badly this night, so logged on to a website that monitors sun spot activity, which causes the Aurora Borealis, or 'Northern Lights'. The site had very strong indicators that night of the aurora being visible at low latitudes..... and speaking of low latitudes... North Bend is a low latitude! The photo was taken west of the old Weyerhauser paper mill around 11:30 at night and facing west to north west, toward the ocean just a mile or so away. I didn't see this much color with my own eyes, but the film picked it up during the 60 second long exposure. Notice the angled 'curtains' on the left side of the pic. I think the stars in the photo include Vega, one of the three stars that make up the "summer triangle". This was so weird to see. The air even had an unusual and distinctive smell because of this electrical effect. Wow, one more for the books.
